Annia Galeria Faustina was the younger daughter of Antoninus Pius and Faustina Senior, and was married to Marcus Aurelius in AD 165. She was given the title of Augusta on the birth of her first child in AD 146, and she subsequently bore many children, one of whom was the future emperor Commodus. She accompanied her husband on his journey to the East in AD 175 and died at Halala, a village at the foot of the Taurus Mountains.

Faustina’s portraits on coins show clearly the rapid evolution in Roman feminine hairstyles in the second century AD. On this beautiful aureus struck under her father’s reign, she resembles a young lady, whose style influenced the future generations, especially in France and in Italy in the early 1800s, when women imitated Imperial Roman styles.
